As New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional Districtheads toward another election, voters have an opportunity to examine not only campaign promises, but the congressional record of the person currently representing the district.

Since first entering Congress in 2023, Congressman Gabe Vasquez has built a record focused heavily on southern New Mexico’s infrastructure, public lands, agriculture, military communities, rural healthcare, housing, public safety and constituent services.

The Duke City Times has endorsed Gabe Vasquez for New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District. That endorsement reflects the publication’s editorial assessment of his record and priorities.

Bringing Federal Investment Home

One of the most tangible parts of Vasquez’s record has been his effort to secure federal funding for projects throughout southern New Mexico.

According to his congressional office, hiswork has brought hundreds of millions of dollars in federal investment to the district, including $71 million for the Nogal Canyon Bridge replacement near Socorro, $61.8 million for the Mesa Grande Drive Extension in Las Cruces, $36.1 million forroad improvements in Jal connected toWIPP infrastructure, and $63.8 million for heavy-duty truck stops in Vado and Lordsburg.

His office also reports securing more than $30 million in Community Project Funding for 30 projects across the district, including wastewater infrastructure, roads, police facilities and other local priorities. GGabe Vasquez for Congress

These investments illustrate one of the less glamorous but important responsibilities of a member of Congress: making sure federal dollars reach communities that need infrastructure.

Helping New Mexicans Navigate the Federal Government

Congressional representation isn’t limited to legislation.

Constituent services can mean helping residents resolve problems with federal agencies such as the IRS, Social Security Administration and Department of Veterans Affairs.

For individual families, that type of assistance can matter just as much as a vote on the House floor.

Protecting New Mexico’s Public Lands

Public lands are particularly important to New Mexico, and Vasquez has made their protection a central part of his congressional work.

In 2025, Vasquez joined Republican Congressman Ryan Zinke in creating the bipartisan Public Lands Caucus. The caucus was established to bring Republicans and Democrats together around conservation, public access and management of federal lands. RRepresentative Gabe Vasquez

In 2026, Vasquez introduced the Public Lands Integrity Act, a bipartisan measuredesigned to prevent federal public lands from being sold or transferred through the budget-reconciliation process without thenormal congressional consideration and public scrutiny. The bill was introduced with Republican and Democratic co-sponsors. 

In May 2026, Vasquez voted for thebipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, a large housing package that passed the House and was described by his office as the largest housing package to clear the chamber in 36 years.

The legislation included measures intended to increase affordable-housing construction, expand housing supply and make it easier forcommunities to convert existing commercial and industrial properties into housing.Representative Gabe Vasquez has also supported legislation addressing corporate ownership of housing and mobile-home affordability.

Whether those policies ultimately produce the desired effects is a matter forpolicymakers and voters to evaluate, buthousing affordability is clearly one of the areas where he has made legislation a central part of his congressional agenda.

Standing Up forTribal Communities

New Mexico’s relationship with its TribalNations is another major part of the district’s story.

Vasquez’s office reports more than $4 million in direct federal investments forTribal communities, including funding forsenior housing at Pueblo de Acoma, drinking-water improvements for Ramah Navajo and wildfire protection at Isleta Pueblo. 

He has also worked on Tribal water settlements, public safety, education and the protection of Tribal sovereignty.

For a state with 19 pueblos, three federally recognized Apache tribes and the Navajo Nation, federal policy toward Indian Country is not an abstract Washington issue. It directly affects New Mexico communities.

Lowering Healthcare Costs and Supporting Rural Hospitals

Healthcare is another major area ofVasquez’s congressional work.

His record includes support for legislationdealing with prescription-drug costs, insulinaffordability and medical debt, as well as opposition to federal policies he argues could put rural hospitals under financial pressure.

Gabe’s TRICARE legislation also demonstrates a more targeted approach to healthcare—addressing transportation barriers faced by military families in rural parts of southernNew Mexico. 

For a state where many communities are separated by long distances and rural healthcare access remains an importantconcern, these issues have particular relevance.

A Bipartisan Record

Perhaps one of the more notable characteristics of Vasquez’s congressional record is the number of issues on which he has worked with Republicans.

His Public Lands Caucus was founded with Republican Congressman Ryan Zinke.

His TRICARE legislation became law with bipartisan support.

His public-lands legislation has Republican co-sponsors.

His agricultural work has involved negotiating with Republicans on Farm Bill provisions.

And his public-safety legislation has included bipartisan measures.

That does not mean Vasquez agrees with Republicans on the major issues dividing Congress. He does not. His voting record reflects substantial Democratic positions on healthcare, abortion, immigration,environmental policy and other issues.

But his record also demonstrates that bipartisan cooperation has been a significant component of his legislative strategy.
